Queenstown에서 Wanaka로 가는 길은 크게 두 개가 있다.
돌아가지만 편하고 넓은 길,
거리는 짧지만 산을 넘는 좁은 길.
돌아가기도 싫고 돌아가는 길의 상당 부분은 이미 거쳐온 길이기 때문에
과감히 산을 넘는 길을 택했다.
캠퍼밴이긴 하지만 어찌 되겠지.
어차피 차들도 별로 없는 길이니 상관없을테고.
길은 상당히 험했다.
좁고 구불구불하고,
비는 내리기 시작하고,
날도 으슬으슬하고,
3톤의 무게에 더해진 나를 포함한 수많은 짐들은 2.5리터 디젤 엔진에게 좀 부담스러운 듯 했다.
그럼에도 나는 좋았다.
워낙 찌뿌둥한 날씨를 좋아하는 데다가
뉴질랜드는 산 뒤에 또 다른 풍경을 숨겨두고 있었고,
그 풍경과 검은 기운의 구름 및 하늘이 전하는 차분하면서도 어두운 느낌은
원래 내가 상상하던 뉴질랜드의 모습과 상당히 흡사했기 때문에.
유진이가 한창 보드를 타던 시기에 이미 뉴질랜드에 몇 개월만 머물렀던 적이 있다고 했다.
그 때 지냈던 곳이 바로 Wanaka.
7년만에 다시 오게 된 남쪽 어느 먼 나라의 조그만 도시는 과연 어떤 느낌일까?

나 역시도 이 도시가 굉장히 맘에 들었다.
7년 뒤에 다시 올 기회가 있을까?
