Day Seven - Fox Glacier and the night drive

겨우겨우 정신을 차리고 차를 출발시킨다.
강과 호수의 원천이 되는 만년설의 모습을 바로 앞에서 볼 수 있다는 Fox Glacier.
예약을 했으면 만년설 위까지 올라갈 수 있었을 터이지만 그냥 앞에서 보는 것에 만족.
추적 추적 내리는 비와 묻어 있는 흙은 을씨년스러움을 더한다.
100년전에 비해 한참 작아진 Glacier를 보며 조금은 걱정스러운 마음이 들었다.
시간은 5시가 조금 넘었는데 이미 해는 산뒤로 넘어갔다.
밝아봐야 푸를것으로 생각했던 하늘이 갑자기 광채를 낸다.
노을과 눈의 반사광이 섞인 것일까? 처음보는 하늘 색에 감탄하며 다시 산길을 가기 시작한다.
마지막 순간의 광채 역시 사라져버린 비가 내리는 산길은 아무것도 보이지 않는다.
아... 저 멀리 한 대의 트럭이 열심히 달리고 있다.
저 뒤에 조용히 붙어서 가면 편하게 달릴 수 있으리라.
'고마워요. 덕분에 편하게 달렸습니다.' 마음속으로 감사하며,
달리기를 2시간여... 드디어 목적지인 Hokitika에 도착했다.
이미 시간은 저녁 8시. 비는 여전히 제법 거세게 내리고 있다.
Hokitika 도심의 숙소는 이미 꽉 찬 상태.
(처음이다. 성수기에는 정말 숙소잡기 만만치 않겠군.)
다행히 3, 4키로미터 떨어진 곳에 또 하나의 Holiday Park가 있다.
우유공장옆에 자리잡은 조금은 희안한 느낌의 Holiday Park.
몸을 씻고, 저녁을 먹고, 빗소리를 들으며 잠이 들었다.
